STRONACHS IMPROVES BUSINESS CONTINUITY WITH VIRTUALISATION
When Stronachs, one of the largest law firms in the North East of Scotland, was reviewing how the firm could make savings in IT without compromising performance, ITManager, Ken Roberts turned to Castle Computer Services and VMware to deliver the best solution.
Discussing the changes that were implemented, Ken said:
“We had a clear corporate objective to create a more efficient infrastructure that would save money and reduce power consumption. This was combined with a need to improve our ability to manage the IT system efficiently and effectively.
“We asked Castle to implement a VMware virtualisation solution that would allow us to operate with a fraction of the number of servers that were in place at the time. In the end,this resulted in a reduction from 18 servers to 3, which had an obvious and immediate impact on the amount of hardware in the building.
“The dramatic reduction in servers delivered immediate cost savings interms of the reduction in power consumption both to run and cool the hardware, which meets one of the key corporate objectives of the implementation.
“The introduction of virtualisation significantly enhances our arrangements for business continuity and means that we have a highly effective business continuity plan. Everything is now replicated and we undertake nightly backups and full weekly backups on the virtual machines. VMware gives us the confidence that in the event of a system failure all our servers and data can be recovered very quickly and with the minimum of fuss.
“We have managed to introduce identifiable and immediate cost savings, while at the same time improving the flexibility of our IT infrastructure and creating robust disaster recovery systems. Castle delivered a great service and did exactly what they promised, when they said they would.
